The Plastic Recycling Deception.

Today we woke up to the shocking news in the press of the report "The Fraud of Plastic Recycling" by the Center for Climate Integrity (CCC) about the truth behind decades of misinformation orchestrated by Big Oil and the plastics industry.

This report reveals an inconvenient truth: plastic recyclability has been a deception perpetuated by Big Oil and the plastics industry for decades.

The deception of the large petrochemical companies

According to this study, large petrochemical companies, including names like Exxon, Chevron, Dow, DuPont, along with their lobby groups and trade organizations, have been aware that mechanical recycling of plastic is not technically or economically viable for some time. more than 30 years.

Despite this, they have carried out fraudulent marketing and misinformation campaigns to convince the public and governments that plastic recycling is an effective solution to combat the plastic waste crisis.

This revelation leads us to seriously question the reliability of big brands and reminds us of the importance of being critical and informed about the products we consume.

Why are plastics difficult to recycle?

More than 99% of plastic is manufactured from fossil fuels, which makes recycling it complicated and in many cases unfeasible.

The toxicity of the material (and its chemical additives) and the high cost of the processes and facilities for the production of recycled plastic materialsit is cheaper to manufacture virgin plastic — are the other two factors that, according to CCC, make up the list of technical limitations. and economical for recycling plastics.

That is why at SOSBAG we provide the most sustainable solution at the end of the useful life of life rafts, since their technical characteristics make their recycling not viable: we reuse their fabric and make original bags, and we prevent them from ending up generating waste.
